In the run-up to Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiering on Netflix on August 27, Rockstar gave press and content creators its most detailed on-record look yet at the game's world and systems — including, for the first time, a size comparison for the Leonida map.
Map size, finally compared
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North's head of development and co-studio head, told YouTuber TGG during an in-person preview that Leonida's world is twice the size of GTA V's map and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. Nelson also said Vice City itself is roughly twice the size of Los Santos, and that Vice City together with its surrounding suburbs is about eleven times larger than Los Santos and its own suburbs, according to VGC's report. It's the first time anyone at Rockstar has put a specific scale figure on the map, rather than leaving size comparisons to fan estimates.
New systems from Rockstar's Dazed interview
Separately, Dazed published an exclusive deep dive built on interviews with named Rockstar staff, including Nelson and narrative SVP Rupert Humphries. Confirmed details include:
- Consequences system: player actions now provoke reactions from the world — Rockstar's example is that simply walking down a street carrying a rifle draws a response from NPCs and police, rather than being consequence-free.
- Character appearance: food affects Jason and Lucia's weight, exercise visibly builds muscle tone, and prolonged sleep deprivation or violence can leave visible marks on their faces and bodies.
- Jason and Lucia switching: Rockstar confirmed players can "play as a couple, or go off and cause chaos independently," per PC Gamer — including seamlessly swapping control mid-mission, such as taking the wheel during a car chase one moment and firing from the passenger seat the next.
- World detail: more than 50 real street artists were commissioned to design murals for Leonida's cities, and Rockstar described a wider range of NPC body types, tattoos, piercings, and clothing than in previous games.
Nelson, addressing the pressure around the leaks that preceded this reveal, told Dazed: "I don't know that any amount of external pressure could compare with the pressure we put on ourselves as a team." On character design, he added: "We want to enable as much self-expression as possible, without losing the essence of the characters."
None of this changes the confirmed November 19, 2026 release date on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. For the full context, see our GTA 6 map guide and Jason vs. Lucia protagonist breakdown.
