Rockstar Reveals GTA 6 Map Size, New Gameplay Systems

Rockstar's Dazed deep dive and Rob Nelson's map comparisons confirm Leonida is 3x Red Dead Redemption 2's size, plus new consequence/appearance systems.

In the run-up to Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiering on Netflix on August 27, Rockstar gave press and content creators its most detailed on-record look yet at the game's world and systems — including, for the first time, a size comparison for the Leonida map.

Map size, finally compared

Rob Nelson, Rockstar North's head of development and co-studio head, told YouTuber TGG during an in-person preview that Leonida's world is twice the size of GTA V's map and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. Nelson also said Vice City itself is roughly twice the size of Los Santos, and that Vice City together with its surrounding suburbs is about eleven times larger than Los Santos and its own suburbs, according to VGC's report. It's the first time anyone at Rockstar has put a specific scale figure on the map, rather than leaving size comparisons to fan estimates.

New systems from Rockstar's Dazed interview

Separately, Dazed published an exclusive deep dive built on interviews with named Rockstar staff, including Nelson and narrative SVP Rupert Humphries. Confirmed details include:

Nelson, addressing the pressure around the leaks that preceded this reveal, told Dazed: "I don't know that any amount of external pressure could compare with the pressure we put on ourselves as a team." On character design, he added: "We want to enable as much self-expression as possible, without losing the essence of the characters."

None of this changes the confirmed November 19, 2026 release date on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. For the full context, see our GTA 6 map guide and Jason vs. Lucia protagonist breakdown.
