Leonida is the fictional Florida-inspired state that hosts Grand Theft Auto VI's open world, and it is considerably bigger than any single Grand Theft Auto setting before it. Rather than one city, Rockstar's official site frames Leonida as a full state — spanning the neon sprawl of Vice City, marshland, small industrial towns, a mountainous northern border, and a tropical island chain to the south. It's the first time the series has returned to a Florida-styled setting since the original Vice City in 2002, this time rebuilt at a scale closer to a real U.S. state than a single metro area.

According to reporting compiled around the game's trailers and marketing beats, Leonida's map is expected to be roughly double the size of Grand Theft Auto V's Los Santos and Blaine County, divided into distinct biomes rather than one continuous urban sprawl. That structure is what lets Rockstar move so sharply in tone between locations — from Vice City's Art Deco skyline to Ambrosia's refinery smoke to Mount Kalaga's backwoods — while keeping them all inside one contiguous state.

What we know from the trailers

Both official trailers use Leonida's variety as a selling point. Trailer 1, released in December 2023, established the setting and the two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, against Vice City's skyline and coastline. Trailer 2, released in May 2025, pushed further out into the state, showing extended looks at the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, and Port Gellhorn alongside more of Vice City itself — Rockstar's clearest signal yet that Leonida is meant to be explored as a whole, not just visited as a backdrop to the city.

Real-world inspiration

Leonida is built as a composite of Florida, drawing directly on real places: Miami for Vice City, the Everglades for Grassrivers, the Florida Keys for the Leonida Keys, and Panama City for Port Gellhorn, with Georgia's Providence Canyon lending its look to Mount Kalaga in the north. That mix of coastal glamour, wetlands, and rural inland towns mirrors Florida's own geography more closely than any earlier Grand Theft Auto state mirrored its real-world basis.
