Game Informer's full Grand Theft Auto VI cover story went live for subscribers on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 — a 14-page feature built on exclusive Rockstar Games interviews, confirming over 170 animal species, a rebuilt weather system, and a new police "Heat" mechanic, alongside 12 new screenshots.
What's confirmed
Wildlife. Leonida's ecosystem includes more than 170 animal species: 60+ bird types (flamingos, pelicans), 30+ land mammals (manatees, alligators, feral cats, armadillos), and marine life such as sharks, whales, and jellyfish in the surrounding waters. Rockstar told Game Informer it built dedicated rendering for iridescence, bioluminescence, individual feather types, and "fully simulated fur."
Weather. The system has been "re-engineered to make everything much more localised and persistent," per Game Informer — meaning it can be sunny in one part of the map while it rains in another. Confirmed features include updated wind dynamics, dynamic cloudscapes, tropical storms and hurricanes that occasionally hit Leonida, and rainbows under the right lighting. This builds on the advanced weather system previewed a day early on September 28.
Police "Heat" system. Six-star wanted levels return, but police now build "Heat" — gathering intelligence based on a player's appearance and the location of a crime scene — which Game Informer says can require players to actually change their appearance to shake a pursuit, rather than just outrunning it.
Map and activities. Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut confirmed Leonida is twice the size of GTA 5's combined Los Santos and Blaine County map, split across six regions: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. Confirmed side activities include jet skiing, kayaking, base jumping, and airboating.
Screenshots. The 12 new images include an aerial Vice City skyline at dusk, a seaplane flying over the Keys during a thunderstorm, a crop duster over farmland, a mountain state-park waterfall scene, an Everglades dock with alligators and an airboat, and gameplay moments for both Jason and Lucia.
The cover art is an original Rockstar illustration of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos on the Vice City docks.
Why it matters
This is the most detailed on-record look at GTA 6's simulation systems since Rockstar's Extended Look aired on Netflix and YouTube on August 27, and the first official confirmation of a specific wildlife count and a named police mechanic. It lands roughly seven weeks before the game's November 19 launch.
The Florida-research angle lines up with what's already been reported about Vice City's real-world roots — see our breakdown of how Vice City compares to real Miami and the current state of the GTA 6 map.
