GTA 6 PS5 Retail Codes Are Region-Locked, Xbox Codes Are Not

Rockstar Support has confirmed that the boxed, disc-less download codes for the PS5 physical edition of GTA 6 are region-locked — a code only redeems on a PlayStation Network account registered to the same region it was sold in. Xbox Series X|S retail codes carry no such restriction and redeem on any account regardless of purchase location.

The distinction only affects the physical release, which ships as a boxed code rather than a disc on both platforms. Rockstar's support page lists PS5 code regions including Brazil, Latin America, North America, Korea, Japan, the UK, Saudi Arabia/UAE, and a broader "Rest of World" tier — buyers need their PSN account's region to match the region the box was sold in, or the code will fail to redeem. Reporting citing the support page also notes Japanese PS5 codes carry a 170-day redemption window starting at launch on November 19, 2026. Rockstar has not explained why PS5 and Xbox are being treated differently.

Why it matters: shoppers who planned to import a cheaper physical copy of GTA 6 from another country — a common move for big console releases — need to check the PS5 box's region before buying if they intend to redeem it against a PSN account from elsewhere. Xbox buyers don't have this problem: any regional physical copy will redeem on any Xbox account.

This only applies to boxed/physical codes. Digital purchases made directly through the PlayStation Store or Xbox Store follow each storefront's normal regional account rules and aren't newly affected by this confirmation.
