If one animal defines Leonida, it's the American alligator. Trailer 1's most-shared wildlife moment shows a gator calmly waddling through the doors of a roadside convenience store — a direct wink at real "Florida man" news footage — and Trailer 2 plus Rockstar's official screenshots of the Grassrivers wetlands put gators back in frame, sunning on banks and cruising through sawgrass channels. Frame analyses collected by outlets like Game Rant consistently rank the alligator among the first species fans identified.
The real American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is a genuine conservation success story: hunted to near-extinction by the 1960s, it rebounded so thoroughly that Florida now estimates over a million wild gators. They inhabit virtually every freshwater body in the state — swamps, lakes, drainage canals, golf-course ponds — which is exactly why they keep turning up in swimming pools and, yes, store entrances. Males can exceed 13 feet, and despite their bulk they can burst-sprint on land over short distances.
Rockstar has form here. Red Dead Redemption 2's Bayou Nwa made alligators an ambient hazard with a full ecology around them, while GTA 5's Los Santos was famously light on wildlife beyond birds, deer and mountain lions in the Chiliad wilderness. The gator-heavy Grassrivers material suggests GTA 6 leans much closer to RDR2's living-ecosystem approach — fitting for a map built on real Florida geography, as our real-life locations guide breaks down. Expect them anywhere water meets land, from the swamps down to the Leonida Keys.
